Disability Support Services

Electricity Concessions

In many states Electricity suppliers are required to offer discounts - typically 15% to 20% - to those having a Disability Pension.

Local Council Services

Home cleaning and shopping help is provided by local councils to elderly infirm people.  Many local councils also provide these services to anyone holding a Disability Pension.

Provision of Home Computers

Several organisations around Australia recycle personal computers from offices and homes, refurbish them, and supply them at no or nominal cost to people with health disabilities.

Canberra

Charity Computers ( at http://www.charitycomputers.com/content/welcome-charity-computers-australia )  recycle and refurbish computers.  They are provided at a low cost to qualifying customers.  Charity Computers also provides installation support and training in the use of computers.

Melbourne

The Equipment Recycling Network Inc ( ERNI)   at http://www.erni.asn.au/index.html  is a a self funded, not-for-profit, registered charity, staffed entirely by volunteers, supporting people with disabilities.    ERNI is based in Ringwood and is a Community Microsoft Authorised Refurbisher.  In order to qualify for a computer the applicant should provide a letter from a Service Provider (eg Doctor, Paediatrician, Physiotherapist or Case Management Officer) stating that they do have a disability and how they believe the applicant would benefit from having access to a personal computer.

ComputerBank in West Melbourne provides a similar service ( details at http://vic.computerbank.org.au/   )

Coffs Harbour

LifeHouse Charity Computers ( at  http://www.lifehouse.net.au/community/charitycomputers.html ) recycles computers to Federal concession card holders.
