Food issues for Australians
What foods in Australia must be fortified with Vitamin D?
By law ALL margarines and similar margarine like table spreads sold in Australia must be fortified with Vitamin D. This is the only foodstuff where Vitamin D fortication is mandatory, unlike many Northern Hemisphere countries where many milk products must also be fortified with Vitamin D. This means that many purchased pastries, biscuits and cakes made with margarine have added Vitamin D, albeit indirectly via the margarine content.
What other foods are vitamin D fortified in Australia?
Outside of margarine and foodstuffs containting margarine, Vitamin D fortification of foods in Australia is still reasonably uncommon. Where it is carried out it is mandatory for the detail and amount of the fortification to be provided on the label.
