All of the above styles are available in 2% dark amber lenses, 10% medium amber lenses, and 40% light amber lenses. The % figure refers to the amount of visible light that is transmitted through the lens. All of these lens filter out close to 100% of the UV(ultraviolet) and 100% of the IR(infrared) light, as well as providing high filtering of the high intensity blue light from the visible light spectrum. At the commencement of the MP the 2% dark amber lens are only used outdoors, with the 10% medium amber being generally the best for indoor use. All frames are in durable black polycarbonate.

The MP Forum recommend that anyone starting on the Marshall Protocol should purchase a pair of 2% dark amber glasses AND a pair of 10% medium amber glasses. The 2%s are for outside use and the 10%s are for indoor use. It is considered unsafe in some light situations to rely only on one pair. Later on in the MP, most patients will find that as their light sensitivity lessens, they are able to use 10% medium ambers outside, but find that they need to purchase a pair of 40% light ambers for inside use.

Fitover styles (Models 31, 36 and 39 ) are for those already wearing prescription spectacles. If your prescription spectacles are not used outdoors, fitovers are probably only needed for the 10% and 40% amber lenses, as the 2% are only rarely required indoors.

For those living in parts of Australia with extremely bright light, the 2% dark ambers may not provide sufficient protection on the brightest summer days, particularly during the first year or so on the MP. One solution, for those who do not have to wear prescription spectacles, is to wear a pair of light amber fitover glasses over the top of a pair of dark amber wraparound glasses.
